ty has this little (or maybe not so little) obsession with snow and igloos. on this particular day ogden got several inches of snow and orem got nothing but rain and lots of it. ty couldn't stand it so we drove up to my parents house in ogden and built an igloo with my darling little sister kitty. this was one of my very favorite days as an engaged couple.

like any artist my feelings about my own work are in constant flux (if you're in a giving mood feel a little sympathy here for my poor husband who has to listen to me cry, philosophize, and rant about art). sometimes i feel like my work is really improving, ideas are flowing, and every shoot i plan goes off without a hitch. other times i lose my confidence and ideas stop coming, creativity stalls, and i can't quite shoot anything the way i envision it. this week i had a little boost of confidence in the form of a second place award. it's a funny thing but sometimes even a second place award in campus art competition can make you feel like a million bucks. below is my vera hinckley mayhew student creative arts competition second place winning photograph. enjoy!

last semester i finished one of my all time favorite projects. it went something like this: in the 77 days leading up to our marriage my fiance (now husband :)) and i took a picture everyday (yes my hubby is a saint). these pictures are a documentation of our engaged lives, demonstrating our similarities and differences and preserving memories. for the next few weeks i'll be posting samplings from the project. enjoy!

the following is a story i shot for my editorial class last semester on the ko ko mo club (located on 25th street in ogden, ut). my wonderful neighbors, ed and cindy simone are the proud owners. they were kind enough to share the interesting history of the bar, show me around, and introduce me to all the patrons. i cannot express how grateful i am for their help with this project. the simone's are some of the kindest and most generous people i've ever come into contact with (bet you wish they were your neighbors, huh?). their help with this project is only a small part of what they have done for me and for my family. i also received a lot of help on this project from my mom and my boyfriend tyler. i could not get the images i do without the help of all the wonderful people in my life... this is just a little thanks to ed, cindy, tyler, my little mama, and everyone else who has helped me along the way (you know who you are). now, without further ado....

if you've been following the blog you'll know that i recently started a headband company with my good friend jess. it's been a great experience. i'm learning so much about business! we did a shoot this week of a few new products... these pics aren't even up on our website yet (academyj.com) so you're getting a little preview! lucky you... thanks so much to my models carly and jenny! it was absolutely freezing outside when we shot these (i'm beginning to learn that it's difficult to click the shutter button when your fingers are frozen). they were so good natured about letting me drag their gorgeous faces into the frigid weather to snap a few pictures!

i was sifting through old files from last semester and came across this little gem. it made me laugh because there is a good story to go with it. my inspiration for this photo was andy goldsworthy (if you don't know who this is, look him up!). this photo was shot as a part of my unnatural nature portfolio (an ongoing project you'll probably hear more about in the future). i drove up 300 South in Provo to shoot this photograph. it was early in the morning because i wanted to ensure that the light wouldn't get too harsh as the sun came up. i was alone (minus the people who walked by and thought i was a nut case). i found the perfect tree and proceeded to pull all the leaves off one side and viola' this was the result:

here are a few more images from my still life class! my goal in this class was find the intrinsic beauty in objects where it may not be immediately apparent. i was inspired by irving penn's found object portfolio. i wanted the pictures to have a fine art feel (my professor didn't like this so much... commercial, commercial, commercial! he demanded. haha i'm not a good listener sometimes).

there is a funny story to go along with these images. to get the pages of the books to crinkle the way i wanted them to i had to soak the books in water and then put them somewhere to dry. as i'm listening to the shins and soaking the books in the kitchen sink my roommate walks in. she got this concerned look on her face and asked politely what i was doing. ah, the joys of being a photographer! i end up doing all sorts of strange things to get the shots i envision.

since i've been naughty and neglected my blog for so long i have a lot to catch up on. last semester i did a project entitled "obscured portraiture". the basic idea was to challenge the rules of traditional portraiture. i accomplished this by partially obscuring the faces of my sitters. the photographs were created in a spirit of lightness, playfulness, and spontaneity. some of the portraits are a bit on the fashion side of things but they were so beautiful i had to include them! the images that follow are the result of 2 months hard work (several shoots and library research sessions, hours brainstorming, as well as, model and prop searching, and lots of editing!). i had the help of many, many wonderful friends... you know who you are... thank you so much!

I can hardly believe what a brilliant, beautiful, talented, and simply incredible woman she has become. My cousins went out of town and left their kids with my family for a few days. We had so much fun feeding the ducks, having tea parties, playing house, and running around with Harley, Eliza, and Beck while their parents were gone. I documented a few of our many adventures below.

Note the muffled hair, striped pajamas and ice cream dripping down Beck's face. In case you're wondering, only the very best babysitters keep the children in pjs till noon and serve ice cream for breakfast! Let me know if you're interested in my babysitting services.

Red Rock and RAIN!

My family and I took a little trip to Moab early this summer. The day we arrived was absolutely gorgeous and perfectly sunny. We fell asleep looking forward to a nice day four-wheeling. The weather seemed to have plans of its own. Over night the clouds rolled in and by the time we drove to the trail and unloaded the four-wheelers it had begun to rain. Since we're all so tough we went out despite the rain. We came back muddy, dripping wet, and freezing but happy. Below are a few shots from the trip.

My dad gets a little tired of me following him around with a lens all day sometimes but I just can't help snapping a few photos of his handsome face.

My mom would probably be grumpy if she knew I posted these photos... So of course I posted them anyway!
